Summer Showcase week #6, Sept. 25, 2015

So week six has finished. We’ve added an additional “around you” section which houses data from DWP and Nomis as well as the Census from 2011. The section give an indication of how mental health is currently affecting your local community - by giving detail on people currently in work with mental health conditions, through to those out of work for under twelve months and over as well as people receiving Disability living allowance and Job seekers Plus.

All of the other aspects of Plexus are now completed and we look forward to being able to review this with the ODI and get ready for the launch at the ODI summit on the 3rd of November.

RE.WORK conference , Sept. 24, 2015

Martin attended day one of RE.Work Future Technology Summit conference in London's Liverpool Street. Topics covered were IoT, Big data, Sensors and Cities, Fashion Technology, Quiet Eyes, Intelligent Cities, Swarm Robotics and Internet of Life. There were talks from Andrew Hudson Smith, Eric Yateman, Chris Brauer, Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz.

During the 2 days, he attended two workshops on VR - Virtual Reality - the future of TV from Visualise and 360 Video 7 Virtual Reality: the Future of News? from Zilah Watson, Editor BBC R&D. Both these had great insights into the innovate and progressive work being carried out currently with VR. It was fascinating to see the 360 video footage from the refugee camp in Calais and how immersive and atmospheric it was in capturing the village and lives the people had.

The summit also showcase a number of innovative products and digital design practices. Martin managed to catch up with Chomko & Rosier who have recently created Heart of a King for the Historic Royal Palaces, which we love. It’s an amazing piece of physical interaction through technology.

Network Profile , Sept. 22, 2015

This lunchtime we launched a new area of Mind's OpenHub  called Network Profile. This gives an overall impact that Mind and the associated Local Minds have. The data used focuses around five key metrics: People, Services, Service Users, Income & Expenditure and Organisations.

It's taken the time to make it right, but Mind now have a tool that gives a solid overview but also allows team members to drill down by region and specific local Mind to the impact they have had to their communities.

The user can view the data graphically and if required take the data away with them to explore further in PDF or CVS formats.

Summer Showcase Week #5, Sept. 18, 2015

So week five has finished. We've now completed the data integration, refined the look and feel, created signup and login systems, fully hooked up the domain and created the preloader for the site.

Next week we will be adding our data set to and applying for it to be certified, refining the user interaction and design to be the best it can and completing the open data section of the app.

We're also hoping to enter Plexus into the EU app challenge by adding some additional data sets to the app which give an overview of trends and change over the last 4 years in relation to mental health in the workplace

Dconstruct 15, Sept. 14, 2015

Martin attended Clearleft's Dconstruct 15 in Brighton last Friday. It was held in the Brighton Pavilion and the context for the day was "Designing the Future". During the day, there were talks from the like of Brian David Johnson - Designing the future.. and building it...with science fiction!, John Willshire - Metadesign for Murph and Dan Hill The city of things.

The talk from Nick Foster from Google's Near future labs on what he called the Future Mundane was particularly interesting discussing what this meant for design, makers and creators moving forward in the 21st century.

The process of designing for the future is an abstract concept and the way many of the speaker approached this was refreshing and challenging in equal measure. Martin said "I took many things from the day, however the process of understanding what's new and what’s not will be altered and my approach to long-term thinking about M/A’s approach to projects and more importantly studio outputs will be re-referenced to take this very important thematic into account."

We can't wait until Dconstruct 16!!!!
